Artist’s Statement
My work is a pursuit of the collision between commercial images and “fine art”. The slick and finished production of one meeting the absurd or personal of the other. I have found myself in this place with the creation of graphic design, TV commercials and music videos for forty plus years.
Much of this work has taken the form of something I’ve dubbed “Subvertising”. A direct response to a life within the ad world from birth. A simultaneous rebuke and celebration.
Don Van Vliet meets Don Draper.
These orange/pink paintings are about “what not to do”. By this I mean the exercise of restraint and the search for simultaneous graphic strength and eye control while culling through the vast “commercial” world of ephemera and detritus
